Popes John Paul II & John XXIII will be declared as saints next year, current Pope Francis has announced. Francis announced the date during a meeting with cardinals inside the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, and said the canonization is set for April 27, 2014. Francis had announced in July he would canonize two of the 20th century’s most influential popes together, approving a second miracle attributed to John Paul. John XXIII has been also credited with a miracle. The beatification of John Paul – which is a step toward sainthood – was started by his successor, Benedict XVI, after John Paul died in 2005. The Vatican said at the time that it waived its usual five-year waiting period to begin the process because of “exceptional circumstances,” according to The Guardian. A first miracle was attributed to John Paul in 2011, in which the Vatican said a French nun that was dying of Parkinson’s disease was cured after she and other nuns prayed for the intercession of John Paul.

A pastor in Lake Charles, Louisiana was on Friday shot and killed as he preached in his church. The man who shot him is allegedly Woodrow Karey, a 53-year-old deacon in the church. He is said to have called 911 and told the dispatcher what he had done. According to witnesses, Karey went into the church – Tabernacle of Praise Worship Centre – at around 8:20 p.m. and shot Pastor Ronald Harris two times. He shot him the first time as he entered the church and the second time at close range after he (Harris) fell on the floor. The suspect then fled the scene on foot but called the sheriff’s office later to surrender. The deacon has no known criminal record and his motive of killing his pastor is still unknown. His bond was set at $1million.

Scores of students have been killed in yet another attack by terrorist group, Boko Haram, in Yobe state. The insurgents attacked the College of Agriculture Gujba, 50 KM south of Damaturu, the state capital yesterday night and killed several students. A staff of the school who confirmed the attack to Channels Television said several dead bodies are still being recovered from bushes, hostels and classes in and around the school as scores were killed in the attack. The source also revealed that surviving students are at the moment making efforts to re unite with their families in fear of further attacks by the insurgents. A witness quoted by Reuters news agency counted 40 bodies at the hospital, mostly those of young men believed to be students. College provost Molima Idi Mato, speaking to Associated Press, also said the number of dead could be as high as 50, adding that security forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students had fled the campus. Boko Haram gunmen this morning Sunday September 29th stormed the student dormitory of the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State, shooting students as they slept, killing at least 30 of them. The death toll could be way higher as several dead bodies were recovered from hostels, classrooms, bushes and corners around the school. Area Military spokesman Lazarus Eli confirmed the incident and said that security forces have been deployed to the school to protect surviving students until they can all leave the campus. Eli said the attack was carried out by “Boko Haram terrorists who went into the school and opened fire on students while they were sleeping"

According to a report by  Sunnewsonline.com , a 20 year old girl allegedly set ablaze the 22 year old new love interest of her ex-boyfriend. Cynthia Onah reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend's house at Onugba Nike area in Enugu State late at night with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on Chinwe Igwe, her ex's girlfriend, who was sleeping. The incident took place on August 24th. The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.” CP Adamu explained that on that fateful day, Cynthia had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika’s home and set Chinwe on fire. It was only the assistance of  neighbours that Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed the room. She was said to have been taken to a private hospital before she was transferred to Annun
